"/mnt/e/b/a/a/2022_07/RAILROADS_DISC1/title_t01.mkv"

The Rock Island lines allow farmers to seed, sneed, and feed.

Transcript:
[Scene 1: opening credits]
[Scene 2:] You've heard of the Golden Horn of Plenty: traditional symbol of prosperity and of good things bestowed upon mankind. Well, these are the wheels which carry the horn of plenty, wheels which take it to the places where the good things abound, and bring it back full and overflowing.
[Scene 3:] We take our American comforts and conveniences pretty much for granted. In our homes we are surrounded by 20th century miracles. Miracles which are not exclusively American, but which are here so commonplace that they are seldom regarded as miracles anymore. Dinner's ready, come and get it.
[Scene 4: dinner table] Hey that's for me. Let me at it. Mmm gravy and lots of it. Jimmy wait 'till everyone is served. Yes Jimmy we'll have some manners here if you don't mind. Jimmy ain't got no manners. Jimmy hasn't any manners, alright, any manners. Oh uh Jimmy we forgot your food prayer. Yes sir.
[Scene 5: kids praying] Lord we thank you for thy food and thy loving care. Amen. Amen.
[Scene 6:] Yes it's all pretty commonplace in America isn't it? The comfortable homes we live in; the cars parked at the door;
[Scene 7:] the bikes and mechanical gadgets of all kinds;
[Scene 8:] schools where every child has a right to expect an education;
[Scene 9:] satisfying recreation for everybody;
[Scene 10:] leisure time in which to enjoy it. Americans you are in luck.
[Scene 11:] Of course you've worked for it. You've made the land hum with the song of your toil.
[Scene 12:] But people in other lands and in other times of work too, worked hard to eke out a mere existence.
[Scene 13:] Why have we been so remarkably successful at it?
[Scene 14:] Why have we been able to make this land of ours so productive? Nature's been pretty lavish of course.
[Scene 15:] We've lived under a governmental system, the first on earth to
[Scene 16:] make each man the captain of his soul.
[Scene 17:] We've had enterprise, our great inheritance from ambitious and freedom-loving forebears.
[Scene 18:] All these are parts of the American mural, parts of the reason for our Golden Horn of Plenty.
[Scene 19:] But look further. Why a car like this, that a man of average means can afford to own? If every American had to build his own automobile with materials of his own gathering and with tools of his own contriving, there would be very few automobiles in the land.
[Scene 20:] Where would an individual get the steel to mold into this beautiful-looking body?
[Scene 21:] Where the vast presses to shape it?
[Scene 22:] Where is the raw rubber to make these tires? The tough fabric to weave with it? These things are as widely scattered as the four winds, or they were until wheels brought them together.
[Scene 23: honk honk] The magic of our modern horn of plenty is the magic of
[Scene 24:] mobility, the magic of the greatest interchange of goods and of services
[Scene 25:] which the world has ever known.
[Scene 26:] Take the farm machinery which helps to make our soil the most productive on earth. This tractor contains quantities of steel which came from the iron ore of the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota.
[Scene 27:] That ore came hundreds of miles by rail and by boat to the mills along the fringes of the Great Lakes.
[Scene 28:] It was refined with the use of coal and limestone and other elements which were brought great distances.
[Scene 29:] Hundreds of types of raw materials and of semi-finished materials and fabricated parts have to be brought together into a single factory before such a complex mechanism as a tractor or a reaper or a threshing machine can be put together.
[Scene 30:] Each great factory such as this makes use of countless car loads of materials
[Scene 31:] during the course of a year. Turns out thousands
[Scene 32:] upon thousands of pieces of machinery, machinery which is sent to every corner of America,
[Scene 33:] and to the four corners of the world for that matter, where farmers need it too till the soil efficiently. Machinery sent at a price which nearly every farmer
[Scene 34:] can afford because it is manufactured by the American mass production method, the method which
[Scene 35:] mass transportation made possible. [Music]
[Scene 36:] The variety of raw materials which we make use of in our modern civilization
[Scene 37:] is seemingly limitless, and the great quantities of them which have to be shipped over
[Scene 38:] vast distances are almost beyond belief. Consider the billions upon
[Scene 39:] billions of bushels of grain which are grown in America every year. Wheat, corn, rice, barley, oats: grains which are the staff of life. These billions of bushels
[Scene 40:] have to be transported to elevators, stored until they are required by processing plants.
[Scene 41:] Shipped and reshipped until they have been made into flour and bread and breakfast food, and deliver to your hometown, your store, your pantry shelf.
[Scene 42:] Livestock, millions of head marketed in an average year.
[Scene 43:] Transported, many of them, several
[Scene 44:] times before they reach their final destination: your dining room table. Transported to feeding areas, to stock yards, to processing plants.
[Scene 45:] Then as meat in refrigerator cars,
[Scene 46:] to your your butcher's cooler, and thence to you.
[Scene 47:] Products of the forest, billions of board feet of lumber a year.
[Scene 48:] Lumber brought to the mill as giant logs, sawed into all shapes and sizes, delivered to the thousands of factories which make products out of wood, set down in your front yard
[Scene 49:] as building material or in your living room as furniture. Countless products to enrich your living.
[Scene 50:] Products of the mind, many of them seldom thought of by the average American in the gigantic quantities which are produced and consumed each year.
[Scene 51:] Products like sulfur and salt, as well as steel and aluminum and lead and coal and copper.
[Scene 52:] Products moving, always moving so that they may be put to your service.
[Scene 53:] Oil, the black gold of our machine age, oil to lubricate your car, to heat your home,
[Scene 54:] to drive the wheels of industry, oil to make gasoline and kerosene,
[Scene 55:] synthetic rubber, useful products almost innumerable. Oil which must be transported before it can be of any use to most people.
[Scene 56:] Things which are brought from distant lands across the sea:
[Scene 57:] coffee and tea, tin and rubber, spices and silk, things in never-ending succession which we bring in from the four corners of the earth.
[Scene 58:] Things which we send abroad in exchange for the items we import. Cotton and grain, minerals, machinery, and fabricated items of every description.
[Scene 59:] This great movement pattern which is the foundation of our 20th century prosperity is symbolized by the ingenious machines which man has created, especially here in America, to keep goods moving: the giants of the rails;
[Scene 60:] the trucks for coordinated rail--truck service;
[Scene 61:] the huge ships and the vast facilities for interchange between one method of transport and another one.
[Scene 62:] One recent development makes possible the shipment of a hundred or more loaded freight cars
[Scene 63:] on a specially-constructed boat called a sea train. This spectacular and useful device eliminates the necessity of loading and reloading from car to boat and
[Scene 64:] back again at port cities. Entire freight cars are picked up by the giant machinery, stored on tracks within the hold of the ship
[Scene 65:] until they are removed by similar machinery at their port of destination. Here the cars are again placed on rails and speeded to their final unloading points: another example of the American inventive mind and business enterprise working to provide America
[Scene 66:] with the greatest transportation system in the world. The backbone of this transportation system is
[Scene 67:] the railroad. The experience of a century, during which mass transportation has helped to change the face of the nation, has proven beyond a doubt
[Scene 68:] that the great bulk of the nation's goods can be moved more efficiently, more swiftly, more dependably on rails than it can by any other system of transport ever devised.
[Scene 69:] The significance of railroads will increase in the years ahead. American business is growing by leaps and bounds.
[Scene 70:] Railroads are almost the only form of mass transportation which can offer an important
[Scene 71:] reserve of hauling capacity to meet the growing demands of American industry and commerce. Railroads have been building for the future. During the past few years
[Scene 72:] billions of dollars have been spent on America's rail lines. The Rock Island lines have been in the forefront of this building program. During the past decade this railroad has rebuilt and modernized plant and structure more thoroughly than most of the nation's major lines.
[Scene 73:] This program of planned progress has placed the Rock Island in position to give a service to shippers and travelers which is unsurpassed.
[Scene 74: map of the USA with railroads] Rock Island occupies a strategic position on the railroad map of the nation. Its lines serve 14 of the most productive and diversified states in the Union. 8,000 miles of modern steel rails are in its network. This is a fabulous empire this Rock Island Wonderland, which stretches
[Scene 75:] westward from Chicago, St. Louis, and Memphis
[Scene 76:] to the mountains of the West, and
[Scene 77: map of the USA with railroads] through its friendly connections onto the Pacific coast. It reaches from the Twin Cities of the North Star State to the Gulf ports of Houston, Texas City, and Galveston of the Lone Star State.
[Scene 78:] It is an empire dotted with great and growing cities, where much of the nation's business is done.
[Scene 79:] It is an empire of praire vastnesses(?) and of broad rich valleys where growing things abound.
[Scene 80:] It is an empire of progress and opportunity unsurpassed. Since 1852 The Rock Island has been helping industry to grow and expand in this area. There are still hundreds
[Scene 81:] and hundreds of available industrial sites which offer the finest advantages of
[Scene 82:] good transportation, adequate power supply, and skilled labor.
[Scene 83:] Throughout that empire The Rock Island now operates one of the finest railroads in the world.
[Scene 84:] Heavy steel rail, superbly laid and ballasted makes it a truly velvet highway.
[Scene 85:] But it is a tough highway too. Able to take the punishing weight of thousands of tons of freight speeding along at a mile-a-minute clip.
[Scene 86:] Modern bridges have been built to handle these tremendous loads. Spectacular
[Scene 87:] in Rock Island's bridge program is this great structure over the Cimarron in western Kansas.
[Scene 88:] Its building was one of the outstanding feats of railroading. Its construction, together with track relocation, grade elimination, and curve reduction, aided greatly in speeding up transcontinental freight and passenger schedules, thus making Rock Island the preferred route between east and west.
[Scene 89:] All Rock Island main lines are genuine speedway. Curves and grades have been reduced to a minimum.
[Scene 90:] Over these super highways of steel rocket freights and rocket passenger trains travel with speed, with safety, with dependability far in excess of anything mass transportation knew a few short years ago.
[Scene 91:] Improvements in motive power of course have been spectacular. The modern diesel-electric locomotive, adopted by The Rock Island shortly after its first introduction, has all but replaced
[Scene 92:] the old iron horse. Along with improved steam locomotives
[Scene 93:] which still have their place on modern railroads, diesels give The Rock Island the capacity to move tremendous quantities of the nation's goods with a dispatch which is truly revolutionary.
[Scene 94:] A vast fleet of new and of continually reconditioned
[Scene 95:] freight cars of all types is part of the equipment reservoir of the modern Rock Island.
[Scene 96:] The most modern devices for traffic control ensure the swift,
[Scene 97:] safe, and dependable movement of Rock Island trains. On the busiest sections of the line, centralized traffic control is in operation.
[Scene 98:] This system eliminates countless delays in the dispatching of trains, enabling one man to
[Scene 99:] see at a glance and to control the movement of all trains in his control area.
[Scene 100:] A movement of a hand and he has thrown electrically a
[Scene 101:] switch which may be many miles distant from him.
[Scene 102:] This enables a train to take another
[Scene 103:] track without delay. Centralized traffic control actually makes one track do the work of two.
[Scene 104:] Two tracks the work of four. It assures a continuous maximum flow of traffic
[Scene 105:] in either direction with the utmost of safety.
[Scene 106: bells ringing]
[Scene 107:] Classification yards, which are miracles of automatic operation, are another
[Scene 108:] Rock Island development designed to accelerate the speed with which freight is handled.
[Scene 109:] Whole cuts of cars like this move over the hump and are sorted in a matter
[Scene 110:] of minutes so that they may be made up into trains for various destinations. In these yards the cars move entirely by force of gravity. Their movement is controlled
[Scene 111:] by skilled towermen whose control boards move
[Scene 112:] distant switches.
[Scene 113:] They also actuate pneumatic retarders to regulate the speed of the cars.
[Scene 114:] So perfect is the control which each operator has over the cars in his section of the yard
[Scene 115:] that they move with velvet smoothness to their appointed positions and take their place in the string with never a bump or a jar.
[Scene 116: music]
[Scene 117:] Classification yards like this save hours, sometimes days in the movement of freight.
[Scene 118:] Rock Island service standards have kept pace with the physical development of the rail road. Rocket freight is handled with the utmost dispatch from
[Scene 119:] the moment the railroad receives it until it reaches its final destination. In the handling of package freight, or in the loading and unloading of
[Scene 120:] whole cars, the emphasis is increasingly on mechanical methods. On ways which will save time, save cost for the shipper.
[Scene 121:] Mobility is the most vital ingredient in America's system of mass production. American railroads, like the planned-progress Rock Island, are making it possible for us to expand the horizons of American business and to bring the good things of life to more and more people. The Golden Horn of Plenty
[Scene 122:] moves on wheels and rails, on Rock Island's wheels of progress.
[Scene 123:] This emblem stands for progress,
[Scene 124:] and wherever you see it, whenever you see, you see a badge of service to shippers everywhere.
[Scene 125: the end screen]

See also:<br transported to elevators stored
6:18
until they are required by processing
6:20
plants shipped and reshaped until they
6:23
have been made into flour and bread and
6:25
breakfast food and deliver to your
6:27
hometown your store your pantry shelf
6:31
livestock millions of head marketed in
6:34
an average year transported many of them
6:38
several times before they reach their
6:40
final destination in your dining room
6:42
table transported to feeding areas to
6:45
stop yards to processing plants there
6:48
has meat in refrigerator cars too your
6:51
butchers cooler and thence to you
6:53
products of the forest billions of board
6:57
feet of lumber a year lumber brought to
6:59
the mill as giant logs sawed into all
7:02
shapes and sizes delivered to the
7:05
thousands of factories which make
7:07
products out of wood set down in your
7:09
front yard as building material or in
7:11
your living room as furniture countless
7:14
products to it
7:16
products of the mind many of them seldom
7:20
thought up by the average American in
7:22
the gigantic quantities which are
7:24
produced and consumed each year products
7:27
like sulfur and salt as well as steel
7:30
and aluminum and LED and coal and copper
7:33
products moving always moving so that
7:36
they may be put to your service oil the
7:40
black gold of our machine age oil to
7:43
lubricate your car to heat your home to
7:45
drive the wheels of Industry oil to make
7:48
gasoline and kerosene synthetic rubber
7:51
useful products almost innumerable oil
7:55
which must be transported before it can
7:57
be of any use to most people things
8:01
which are brought from distant lands
8:02
across the sea coffee and tea tin and
8:07
rubber spices and silk things in
8:10
never-ending succession which we bring
8:12
in from the four corners of the earth
8:15
things which we send abroad in exchange
8:18
for the items we import cotton and grain
8:21
minerals machinery and fabricated items
8:24
of every description this great movement
8:28
pattern which is the foundation of our
8:30
20th century prosperity is symbolized by
8:33
the ingenious machines which man has
8:35
created especially here in America to
8:38
keep goods moving the Giants of the rail
8:43
the trucks for coordinated rail truck
8:46
service the huge ships and the vast
8:49
facilities for interchange between one
8:51
method of transport and another one
8:55
recent development makes possible the
8:56
shipment of a hundred or more loaded
8:58
freight cars on a specially constructed
9:01
boat called a sea train this spectacular
9:04
and useful device eliminates the
9:06
necessity of loading and reloading from
9:08
car to bolt and back again at port
9:11
city's entire freight cars are picked up
9:14
by the giant machinery stored on tracks
9:17
within the hold of the ship until they
9:19
are removed by similar machinery at
9:21
their port of destination here the cars
9:24
are again placed on Rails
9:25
and speeded to their final unloading
9:27
points another example of the American
9:30
inventive mind and business enterprise
9:32
working to provide America with the
9:35
greatest transportation system in the
9:37
world the backbone of this
9:40
transportation system is the railroad
9:42
the experience of a century during which
9:46
mass transportation has helped to change
9:48
the face of the nation has proven beyond
9:50
a doubt that the great bulk of the
9:52
nation's Goods can be moved more
9:54
efficiently more swiftly more dependably
9:57
on rails than it can by any other system
10:01
of transport ever devised the
10:03
significance of railroads will increase
10:05
in the years ahead
10:07
American business is growing by leaps
10:09
and bounds railroads are almost the only
10:12
form of mass transportation which can
10:15
offer an important reserve of hauling
10:17
capacity to meet the growing demands of
10:20
American industry and commerce railroads
10:23
have been building for the future during
10:26
the past few years billions of dollars
10:28
have been spent on America's rail line
10:31
The Rock Island lines have been in the
10:34
forefront of this building program
10:36
during the past decade this railroad has
10:39
rebuilt and modernized plant and
10:41
structure more thoroughly than most of
10:43
the nation's major lines this program of
10:46
planned progress has placed the Rock
10:48
Island in position to give a service to
10:50
shippers and travelers which is
10:52
unsurpassed
11:00
Rock Island occupies a strategic
11:03
position on the railroad map of the
11:05
nation its lines serve 14 of the most
11:09
productive and diversified states in the
11:11
Union 8,000 miles of modern steel rails
11:14
are in its network this is a fabulous
11:17
empire this Rock Island Wonderland which
11:20
stretches westward from Chicago st.
11:22
Louis and Memphis to the mountains of
11:24
the West and through its friendly
11:26
connections on to the Pacific coast it
11:29
reaches from the Twin Cities of the
11:30
North Star State to the Gulf ports of
11:33
Houston Texas City and Galveston of the
11:35
Lone Star State it is an empire dotted
11:38
with great and growing cities where much
11:41
of the nation's business is done it is
11:44
an empire of very vast receipts and of
11:47
broad rich valleys we're growing things
11:49
above it is an empire of progress and
11:52
opportunity unsurprised since 1852 The
11:57
Rock Island has been helping industry to
11:59
grow and expand in this area there are
12:02
still hundreds and hundreds of available
12:05
industrial sites which offer the finest
12:07
advantages of good transportation
12:09
adequate power supply and skilled labor
12:13
throughout that Empire The Rock Island
12:16
now operates one of the finest railroads
12:18
in the world heavy steel rail superbly
12:23
laden ballasted makes it a truly velvet
12:26
Highway but it is a tough Highway to
12:29
able to take the punishing weight of
12:32
thousands of tons of freight speeding
12:34
along at the mile-a-minute clip modern
12:37
bridges have been built to handle these
12:39
tremendous laws spectacular in rock
12:42
island's bridge program is this great
12:44
structure over the Cimarron in western
12:46
Kansas its building was one of the
12:49
outstanding feats of railroading
12:51
it's construction together with cracked
12:54
relocation grade elimination and curve
12:56
reduction aided greatly in speeding up
12:59
transcontinental freight and passenger
13:01
schedules thus making Rock Island the
13:04
preferred route between east and west
13:20
all Rock Island main lines are genuine
13:24
Speedway's curves and grades have been
13:27
reduced to a minimum over these super
13:30
highways of steel rocket crates and
13:33
rocket passenger trains travel with
13:35
speed with safety with dependability far
13:38
in excess of anything mass
13:40
transportation view a few short years
13:42
ago improvements in voting power of
13:46
course have been spectacular
13:48
the modern diesel electric locomotive
13:50
adopted by the rock island shortly after
13:53
its first introduction has all but
13:55
replaced the old iron Horace along with
13:58
improved steam locomotives which still
14:01
have their place on modern railroads
14:03
diesels give the Rock Island the
14:05
capacity to move tremendous quantities
14:07
of the nation's goods with a dispatch
14:09
which is truly revolutionary a vast
14:14
fleet of mule and the continually
14:16
reconditioned freight cars of all types
14:18
is part of the equipment reservoir of
14:20
the modern Rock Island the most modern
14:25
devices for traffic control ensure the
14:27
Swift safe and dependable movement of
14:30
Rock Island trains on the busiest
14:33
sections of the line centralized traffic
14:36
control is in operation this system
14:39
eliminates countless delays in the
14:41
dispatching of trains enabling one man
14:44
to see at a glance and to control the
14:46
movement of all trains in his control
14:49
area a movement of a hand and he is
14:54
thrown electrically a switch which may
14:56
be many miles distant from him this
14:59
enables a train to take another track
15:01
without delay
15:04
centralized traffic control actually
15:06
makes one track to the work of two two
15:09
tracks the work of four it assures a
15:12
continuous maximum flow of traffic in
15:14
either direction with the utmost of
15:17
safety
15:53
classification yards which are miracles
15:55
of automatic operation are another Rock
15:58
Island development designed to
15:59
accelerate the speed with which Freight
16:01
is handled all cuts of cars like this
16:05
move over the hump and are sorted in a
16:08
matter of minutes so that they may be
16:09
made up into trains for various
16:11
destinations in these yards the cars
16:15
move entirely by force of gravity their
16:20
movement is controlled by skilled
16:21
Powerman whose control boards move
16:23
distant switches they also actuate
16:28
pneumatic retarders to regulate the
16:30
speed of the cars
16:33
so perfect is the control which each
16:36
operator has over the cars in his
16:38
section of the arc that they move with
16:40
velvet smooth they're appointed
16:42
positions and take their place in the
16:44
string with never a bump or a jar
17:40
classification yards like this
17:42
save our sometimes days in the movement
17:45
of freight rock island service standards
17:50
have kept pace with a physical
17:51
development of the rail rocket Freight
17:54
is handled with the utmost dispatch from
17:57
the moment the railroad receives it
17:59
until it reaches its final destination
18:00
in the handling of packaged freight or
18:04
in the loading and unloading of whole
18:06
cars the emphasis is increasingly on
18:09
mechanical methods on ways which will
18:12
save time save cost for the shipper
18:15
mobility is the most vital ingredient in
18:19
America's system of mass production
18:21
American railroads like the planned
18:23
progress Rock Island are making it
18:26
possible for us to expand the horizons
18:28
of American business and to bring the
18:31
good things of life to more and more
18:33
people the Golden Horn of Plenty moves
18:36
on wheels and rails on rock island's
18:40
wheels of products this emblem stands
18:44
for progress and wherever you see it
18:47
whenever you see it you see a badge of
18:51
service whose shippers everywhere
19:01
you</pre>
identifier basically from stdout of "lubuntu@lubuntu:[/home/lubuntu/openssl-3.0.0]$ find . -type d",
